You don’t need to be a GIS expert or have GIS software to take advantage of the GIS data and web services put out by the NYS GIS Program Office (GPO).  Frank Winters from the NYS Office of Information Technology Services will start his presentation with a discussion of GIS data strategy including some examples of economic development activities that have happened in part because of quality GIS data that is publicly available.   He will then give you some background on the programs of the GPO and data resources available.  Frank will then provide some examples of using the GIS Web services (APIs) in traditional applications and will end with some news on nationwide partnerships that are developing with commercial map providers.

Speaker
Frank Winters, NYS Geographic Information Officer, NYS ITS

Frank is the NYS Geographic Information Officer and serves as the Executive Director of the NYS Geospatial Advisory Committee.  He also serves as the President of the National State Geographic Information Council and was received State Scoop Magazine 2021 IT Leader of the Year award.  Frank has a MS in Geography from the University of Idaho and has been involved with GIS in NYS Government for 30 years.
