Data Transparency and Interactive Dashboards

This presentation will provide an overview of a state agency’s experience with leveraging data as a strategic asset. Key considerations will be discussed, including the important of leadership commitment to data-driven decision making, supporting data literacy, and increasing public transparency.  Additionally, a focus on data maturity often results in the need for new analytical skills, expanded use of business intelligence and adoption of cloud-based solutions.  A demonstration will be given on how the state agency is increasing stakeholder engagement through the release of Medicaid data using web-based interactive dashboards.

Presenter Bios:

Tamika Black, PhD, currently serves as a Deputy Commissioner and the Chief Data Officer for the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) and oversees the Division of Data Strategy and Management.  She has been with OPWDD for 11 years in various senior leadership roles. Her career in public service spans over 20 years in the areas of finance and budgeting, data and analysis, quality and performance improvement, and strategic planning. 

Kelly Stengel, MPH, is the Director of the Bureau of Population Health within the Division of Data Strategy and Management at OPWDD. In this role, she leads the development and deployment of public facing dashboards and data products which support OPWDD accountability and transparency. Previously, she worked for the Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene (RFMH) and New York Assoc. of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services (NYAPRS) conducting employment and disability policy research.
