Come help us celebrate Open Data Day and learn about the Value of Open Data: Stories from NYS Agencies

International Open Data Day is Saturday, March 5! Open Data Day is an annual celebration to highlight the benefits of open data and encourage the adoption of open data policies in government, business and civil society. Check out https://opendataday.org/ to learn more.

The NYS Forum is excited to bring business and IT professionals together virtually to share stories and strategies about open data.  New York State’s open data website, data.ny.gov, contains nearly 2,000 catalog items with more than 700 million records published by 58 NYS agencies and authorities. The award-winning website is a hub for one-stop access to information that helps the public better understand what is happening in New York state government.

This session will highlight the value of open data with stories from different agencies about their open data strategy, including insights on automating dataset refreshes to the data.ny.gov website, and ways to leverage the data.ny.gov website with spatial data, data links, and data files.

Speakers:

Rebecca Gagnon, Becky Gagnon manages Data Governance as part of the Information Technology team at the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).  In addition to keeping NYSERDA’s sensitive data secure, Becky leads the effort to make NYSERDA’s public data accessible to both internal and external stakeholders through open data, data warehouses, and data visualization and mapping strategies.  Becky holds a B.S. in Physics with a minor in Statistics. She joined NYSERDA in 2009 and has nearly 20 years of experience in the energy industry.

Ari Epstein, Ari has 17 years’ experience managing data and technology assets in public sector and higher education contexts.  He serves as the New York State Department of State’s chief data officer.  In this capacity, he leads efforts to stand up governance, education, and tools needed to measure and improve the department’s data management practices.  Prior to his current role, Ari oversaw several strategic information initiatives in the department’s Office of Local Government. Before he joined state service in 2014, Ari oversaw Cornell University’s shared campus governance programs, delivering online solutions to support voting, grants management, and committee operations.  Ari holds a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Cornell University and M.P.A. from Syracuse University.
